• The effect seen when the Sun is surrounded by a large halo is called a 22-degree halo. It happens when sunlight passes through ice crystals in high-altitude clouds, bending at an angle of about 22 degrees. This creates a circular ring around the Sun (or Moon). I almost ran inside to grab my camera, but if I had, I would have missed it! Thankfully, I snapped a great photo with my smartphone—by the time I even thought about getting my camera, the halo had already disappeared.
